The Abu Dhabi government’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has introduced a new Arabic-language artificial intelligence model called Falcon Arabic. This model is designed to work with Modern Standard Arabic and various regional dialects. TII claims Falcon Arabic performs as well as models that are ten times its size. Alongside this, TII released Falcon H1, a smaller model that outperforms similar models from Meta and Alibaba.
The UAE aims to maintain its position as a leader in AI technology in the Middle East. Many companies in the region are reconsidering the high costs of building AI models from scratch. Falcon Arabic shows the UAE’s commitment to advancing AI technology tailored specifically for Arabic speakers. While Falcon had strong rankings in 2023 on the AI platform Hugging Face, it has recently fallen outside the top 500 models and has fewer users compared to rivals like Meta and China’s DeepSeek.
Beyond model development, the UAE is investing in AI infrastructure. G42, a major Emirati tech company, plans to build a 5-gigawatt data center campus in Abu Dhabi, partnering with several US firms. MGX, an investment fund co-founded by G42, has teamed up with Nvidia and French companies to develop Europe’s largest AI data center campus. MGX also supports US AI companies including OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI, showing the UAE’s broad involvement in the global AI market.
Falcon Arabic is important for improving AI technology that understands and uses Arabic, a language often overlooked in AI development. Enhancing AI in Arabic can benefit many fields like education, government services, and business by offering better digital tools and support for Arabic-speaking users.
Despite its potential, Falcon faces stiff competition from open-source models developed by Meta and DeepSeek. Maintaining progress will require ongoing updates and increased user engagement. The UAE’s investments in data centers and international partnerships aim to strengthen the country’s AI capabilities and help it stay competitive.
The launch of Falcon Arabic is part of the UAE’s larger plan to be a key player in AI technology. The country’s focus on innovation and infrastructure aims to ensure it keeps pace with global AI advancements
