Deshaun Watson’s Legal Troubles Come to an End as Final Lawsuits Are Dismissed
The End of a Long Legal Battle
After years of legal turmoil that threatened to derail his NFL career, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has finally seen the last of nearly 30 civil lawsuits against him dismissed. The final two cases, which had been scheduled to go to trial in the coming weeks, were quietly dismissed according to recent court records. This marks the end of a painful chapter that began back in 2021 when Watson was still playing for the Houston Texans. The allegations against the star quarterback were serious and numerous – 27 women in total came forward with accusations ranging from inappropriate exposure and unwanted touching to more serious claims of sexual assault. The accusations painted a disturbing pattern of behavior that allegedly occurred primarily during massage appointments between 2017 and 2020, when Watson was at the height of his career with the Texans.
The nature of the allegations was deeply troubling. According to court filings in Texas, multiple women accused Watson of exposing himself during massage sessions, touching them with his genitals, and kissing them without consent. Some allegations went even further, with claims that Watson had forced women to perform oral sex, and one woman accused him of sexual assault. One of the most recent lawsuits, filed as late as September 2024, alleged that Watson had forced himself on a woman four years earlier while still playing in Houston. That particular lawsuit sought $1 million in damages. Throughout this ordeal, Watson has consistently maintained his innocence, denying any wrongdoing and claiming he doesn’t remember or recall the sexual encounters described by his accusers.
Settlement and Confidentiality Surround the Dismissals
While the dismissals represent a legal victory for Watson, the circumstances surrounding them remain somewhat murky due to confidentiality agreements. Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing one of the women whose lawsuit was dismissed on Friday, confirmed that his client’s case had been settled but declined to provide any additional details, citing the confidential nature of the settlement agreement. His client had alleged that Watson touched her with his penis multiple times during a massage session – a claim that Watson and his legal team had vigorously disputed. The second dismissed lawsuit’s status is less clear. Anissah Nguyen, the attorney representing that plaintiff who had accused Watson of pressuring her to perform oral sex during a massage, did not immediately respond to requests for comment about whether her client’s case had also been settled or was simply dismissed.
The confidential nature of these settlements is typical in high-profile cases involving celebrities and professional athletes. David Ring, a California-based attorney who specializes in representing victims of sexual assault but is not connected to the Watson lawsuits, provided some context for why these cases would be resolved outside of court. He explained that the vast majority of civil lawsuits are typically settled before reaching trial, and that high-profile defendants particularly prefer to avoid the spectacle and public scrutiny of a courtroom trial. “He’s trying to put all of this behind him,” Ring observed, suggesting that Watson and his legal team were motivated to resolve these matters privately rather than risk further damage to his reputation and career through public testimony and media coverage. Watson’s attorneys, including prominent Houston lawyer Rusty Hardin who had previously characterized the allegations as “meritless,” declined to comment on the dismissals.
The Texans’ Role and Their Own Legal Settlement
The legal complications extended beyond just Watson himself – the Houston Texans organization also found themselves in the crosshairs of litigation. The woman represented by attorney Anissah Nguyen had not only sued Watson but also the Texans organization, alleging that Watson had assaulted women with the help and resources provided by the team. This lawsuit suggested that the Texans had either knowingly facilitated Watson’s alleged misconduct or had turned a blind eye to warning signs. That lawsuit against the Texans was also dismissed last week, though a spokesperson for the team did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the dismissal or whether it involved a settlement.
This wasn’t the first time the Texans had to deal with legal fallout from Watson’s alleged actions. Back in July 2022, 30 women who had accused the organization of ignoring or enabling the allegations against their former star quarterback reached a settlement with the team. The details of that settlement were not disclosed, but it represented a significant moment when the organization took responsibility for its role in the situation, whether through action or inaction. The fact that the Texans faced such widespread legal action from so many women suggests there were systemic concerns about how the organization handled Watson’s behavior and whether they provided him with resources or cover that allowed the alleged misconduct to continue. The settlements allowed the team to move forward without the damaging publicity of a trial, though questions about their institutional accountability lingered.
Criminal Investigations and NFL Consequences
While Watson now appears to be clear of civil litigation, his legal journey included brushes with the criminal justice system that ultimately didn’t result in charges. Two separate grand juries in Texas reviewed the evidence and allegations against Watson but declined to indict him on criminal charges. This was a significant legal victory for Watson at the time, as criminal charges would have carried far more serious consequences than civil lawsuits, including the possibility of imprisonment. However, the lack of criminal indictment didn’t mean Watson escaped consequences altogether. The NFL has its own standards for player conduct that operate independently of the criminal justice system, and the league conducted its own investigation into the allegations.
Following their investigation, the NFL suspended Watson for the first 11 games of the 2022 season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. This suspension came after Watson had been traded to the Cleveland Browns in March 2022 in a blockbuster deal that included a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract – one of the richest deals in NFL history and a controversial move given the pending allegations. Along with the suspension, Watson was fined $5 million and was required to undergo a mandatory evaluation before being reinstated by the league. The suspension and fine represented the NFL’s determination that regardless of criminal charges, Watson’s conduct had violated the standards expected of players. Since joining the Browns, Watson has appeared in only 19 games due to the combination of his NFL suspension and various injuries, making his massive contract one of the most criticized in recent sports history.
The Pattern of Settlements and Moving Forward
Most of Watson’s legal problems were resolved through settlements reached in 2022, when the majority of the lawsuits brought against him were quietly settled out of court. The dismissal of these final two cases represents the end of a settlement process that has spanned several years. While the specific terms of these settlements remain confidential, the pattern suggests that Watson and his legal team pursued a strategy of resolving cases privately rather than fighting them in court, even as Watson publicly maintained his innocence. This approach is common among high-profile defendants who can afford substantial settlement payments and who prioritize protecting their reputation and career over the principle of proving their innocence in court.
For the women who brought these lawsuits, the settlements likely represent a mixed outcome. On one hand, they avoided the trauma and public scrutiny of testifying in court about deeply personal and painful experiences. They also received financial compensation, though the amounts remain confidential. On the other hand, settlements without admissions of guilt mean Watson never publicly acknowledged wrongdoing, and the facts of what actually happened remain disputed. For Watson, the end of these lawsuits allows him to finally focus entirely on his football career without the distraction and stress of pending litigation. However, the cloud of these allegations will likely follow him throughout his career, and his on-field performance with the Browns has not yet justified the massive investment the team made in him. The Browns organization, for their part, took a calculated risk in trading for Watson despite the serious allegations, and whether that gamble pays off remains to be seen as Watson attempts to rebuild his career and reputation on the field.
