Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s firm stance on continuing the war in Gaza is hindering peace efforts, according to the Palestinian group Hamas. Hamas stated that Netanyahu’s recent comments reveal his intention to undermine ceasefire negotiations and delay the release of prisoners.
On Wednesday, Netanyahu confirmed his government’s plan to fully reoccupy the Gaza Strip and dismissed any proposal to end the conflict. Hamas responded by describing Netanyahu as a leader obsessed with violence and genocide, accusing him of driving the region toward greater instability for political gain.
Netanyahu’s reference to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan, which includes the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, shifts responsibility to Washington to clarify its stance on this issue. The United States currently acts as a mediator in attempts to end the war.
Since February, Trump has advocated for taking control of Gaza and relocating its population to transform the area into a tourist destination. This plan has faced widespread rejection from Arab nations and others, who view it as a form of ethnic cleansing.
The Israeli military offensive against Gaza, ongoing since October 2023, has resulted in nearly 53,700 Palestinian deaths, many of whom are women and children. This has sparked international concern and calls for accountability.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November 2023 for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave.
Netanyahu’s continued hardline position complicates efforts to reach a ceasefire and humanitarian relief. The conflict remains a major source of regional instability, drawing global calls for urgent intervention and peaceful resolution.
