Investigation Underway at Jeffrey Epstein’s Former New Mexico Ranch
Authorities Search Remote Property for Evidence of Sexual Abuse
On Monday, state investigators descended upon a remote ranch in New Mexico that was once owned by the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The property, located in the small community of Stanley about 30 miles south of Santa Fe, is now the focus of a renewed investigation into allegations that it may have served as a location for sexual abuse and sex trafficking of young women. The search, conducted by the New Mexico Department of Justice with assistance from the New Mexico State Police and the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office, marks a significant development in efforts to uncover the full extent of Epstein’s alleged criminal activities beyond what was previously known. State Attorney General Raúl Torrez’s office has emphasized that the current property owners are cooperating fully with the investigation, allowing authorities access to the sprawling estate that Epstein called Zorro Ranch during his ownership.
The History and Sale of the Notorious Property
Jeffrey Epstein purchased the extensive Zorro Ranch property back in 1993 from Bruce King, who was serving as New Mexico’s Democratic governor at the time. The acquisition of this secluded land allowed Epstein to create what would become one of his several luxury retreats, where he allegedly entertained high-profile guests away from public scrutiny. On the property, he constructed an impressive hilltop mansion complete with a private runway, creating a self-contained compound that offered maximum privacy and minimal oversight. The ranch remained under Epstein’s control until his death, after which it became part of his estate’s assets. In 2023, the property was sold to settle debts owed to creditors, with the new owners being the family of Don Huffines, a Texas Republican who recently won his party’s primary in the race for state comptroller. The sale of the property doesn’t close the book on its troubling past, however, as investigators now believe there may be physical evidence on the grounds that could shed light on crimes that allegedly occurred there.
Why the Investigation Was Reopened Now
The decision to reopen the investigation into activities at the ranch wasn’t made lightly or without cause. In February, Attorney General Torrez announced that his office would be taking another look at the property and what allegedly transpired there before Epstein’s death in 2019. This decision came in the wake of newly released documents known as the “Epstein files,” which had previously been sealed but were made public following legal proceedings. These files contained revelations that state prosecutors felt warranted a fresh examination of the case. Interestingly, New Mexico had actually initiated an investigation into the ranch back in 2019, but that case was closed at the request of federal prosecutors in New York who were handling their own case against Epstein at the time. Now, with access to information that wasn’t available during the initial investigation, state authorities believe they have sufficient reason to conduct a thorough search of the property and potentially pursue justice for victims who may have been harmed there.
The FBI Files and New Evidence
The previously sealed FBI files that prompted this renewed investigation appear to contain significant information that wasn’t available to state prosecutors during their first look at the case. While the specific contents of these files haven’t been fully disclosed to the public, they apparently include details about activities at the ranch that investigators believe deserve further scrutiny. State prosecutors have stated that the “revelations outlined in the previously sealed FBI files warrant further examination,” suggesting that the documents contain credible allegations or evidence of criminal activity. This new evidence, combined with testimony from possible victims who were interviewed by the state attorney general’s office in 2019, has created a compelling case for taking a closer look at the property itself. Investigators hope that by physically searching the ranch, they may uncover additional evidence—whether documents, physical artifacts, or other materials—that could help build a more complete picture of what occurred there and potentially identify other victims or witnesses who haven’t yet come forward.
Epstein’s Death and Unanswered Questions
Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in August 2019 while being held in a Manhattan jail awaiting trial on federal charges of sexually abusing and trafficking dozens of underage girls. His death prevented him from facing justice in court and left many questions unanswered about the full scope of his alleged criminal network. While Epstein was never charged with crimes specifically related to activities in New Mexico, the state attorney general’s office confirmed in 2019 that investigators had interviewed possible victims who had visited his ranch. The fact that he owned multiple properties where he allegedly committed similar crimes—including his well-known residences in New York, Florida, and a private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands—has led investigators to believe that the New Mexico ranch may have served a similar purpose. The remote location and privacy afforded by the sprawling property would have made it an ideal location for illegal activities, and investigators are determined to uncover the truth about what happened there, even though Epstein himself can no longer be held accountable.
Moving Forward: Commission and Continued Investigation
Beyond the current search of the property, New Mexico state legislators have demonstrated their commitment to getting to the bottom of this matter by establishing a new commission specifically tasked with investigating past activities at the ranch. This legislative action shows that the state is taking a comprehensive approach to understanding what occurred on the property and ensuring that all possible victims receive justice and support. The New Mexico Department of Justice has pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses while being respectful of the sensitive nature of the case and the privacy of survivors. In their statement, prosecutors emphasized their commitment to “support the survivors and follow the facts wherever they lead,” indicating that they’re prepared to pursue the investigation regardless of where it might take them or whom it might implicate. As investigators comb through the property looking for evidence, the hope is that this search will provide answers for the victims who have waited years for justice and help ensure that anyone else who may have been involved in facilitating Epstein’s alleged crimes is held accountable. The cooperation of the current property owners has been crucial in allowing this investigation to move forward, and authorities remain hopeful that the search will yield significant findings that will help bring closure to this dark chapter.
