US President Donald Trump has reiterated his commitment to providing food aid to Palestinians in Gaza. A new, US-backed system to deliver aid into the region is expected to begin soon, according to Washington’s envoy to Israel.
A senior Palestinian official confirmed on Friday that Hamas and the US are in talks about a possible ceasefire and aid for Gaza. The US government has expressed its support for delivering essential food supplies to the region.
Diplomatic Efforts and Negotiations Continue
A US State Department spokesperson said they could not provide details about ongoing talks. However, they mentioned that Qatar and Egypt are still working to reach an agreement. The spokesperson added that Hamas is responsible for the ongoing conflict and for any resumption of hostilities.
Trump has warned Hamas about the consequences if it continues holding hostages, including American Edan Alexander and the bodies of four Americans. The US has previously discussed the release of American hostages held in Gaza.
Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Hamas might release Alexander, an American-Israeli hostage, as a goodwill gesture toward Trump. Netanyahu will visit the Middle East this week, and this gesture could be seen as a diplomatic move before his arrival.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Since March 2, Israel has cut off all supplies to Gaza, leaving the 2.3 million residents facing severe shortages of food and resources. Stockpiled food from an earlier ceasefire agreement has almost run out, worsening the situation. On March 18, Israel ended the ceasefire reached in January and resumed military operations in Gaza.
Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, has said it is willing to release all remaining hostages taken during attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. However, they demand Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza and a permanent ceasefire in return. Israel has stated that the war will continue until Hamas is dismantled completely.
Casualties and Destruction
The October 7 Hamas attacks resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people in Israel, with 251 hostages taken back to Gaza. On the Palestinian side, Israeli military actions have killed more than 52,800 people, mostly civilians, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned of the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including the risk of famine. With infrastructure severely damaged and aid supplies limited, the situation for the civilian population continues to worsen.
The Road Ahead: Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution
While talks between Hamas and the US continue, the path to a ceasefire remains unclear. President Trump’s commitment to providing aid and promoting diplomacy is vital, but the humanitarian needs in Gaza are urgent.
