Tragedy Strikes at High School Hockey Game: A Family Torn Apart
The Unthinkable Interrupts a Celebration
What was supposed to be a proud moment for a family celebrating their youngest son’s senior night at a high school hockey game turned into an unspeakable nightmare Monday afternoon in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. At the Dennis M. Lynch Arena, where parents, students, and friends gathered to cheer on young athletes, gunshots suddenly rang out through the stands, shattering the joyful atmosphere in an instant. The violence that unfolded was not a random act of terror but something even more heartbreaking—a targeted attack by 56-year-old Robert Dorgan against his own family members. When the chaos subsided, two people lay dead, three others were critically wounded, and a community was left reeling from the senseless violence that had invaded what should have been a safe space of community and celebration. The shooter, who also went by the name Roberta Esposito, was subdued by brave bystanders before taking his own life at the scene.
Lives Lost and Forever Changed
The victims of this horrific attack were people who had simply come together to support a young hockey player on his special night. Among those killed were 52-year-old Rhonda Dorgan, the shooter’s ex-wife, and her 23-year-old son Aidan Dorgan—a bright young man with his whole life ahead of him. According to Pawtucket’s acting public safety director and police chief, Tina Goncalves, three others were critically wounded in the attack: Rhonda’s parents and Thomas Geruso, a family friend who serves as assistant principal at Charles E. Shea High School in Pawtucket. All three wounded victims remained in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence as of Tuesday. Those who knew Aidan described him as exactly the kind of person you’d want your own children to become. Ethan Kasht, who knew the family well, painted a picture of a young man full of life: “Great kid. Fun. He loved having fun. Every time we’ve seen him, just a great kid. Always laughed, always made jokes. Respectful. Good family, especially the mom.” Aidan had just graduated from Merrimack College in 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and was actively pursuing his master’s degree, building toward a promising future that was cut tragically short.
A Family’s Grief and Unanswered Questions
In the aftermath of this devastating attack, the Dorgan family released a statement through their attorney, Lawrence J. Signore, expressing the profound pain that extends far beyond what any news headline could capture. “We are reminded that behind every headline is a family experiencing profound pain and loss,” the statement read, acknowledging not only their own suffering but also that of all families touched by this tragedy. The family emphasized that while many questions are being asked about what happened and why, their immediate focus remains on those who were injured and whose lives have been forever altered by the violence. As investigators work to piece together what could have motivated such a horrific act, police have confirmed that there was no prior indication that violence was coming. “They were all at the event for a juvenile son who was playing hockey. It was their senior night. There was no expectations or any indication that there was going to be any type of violence yesterday at the arena,” Chief Goncalves explained, highlighting the complete shock of an attack that came without warning during what should have been a memorable family celebration.
The Investigation and Troubling Background
As police continue their investigation into the shooting, they’ve characterized it as a clearly targeted attack, though the specific motive remains unclear. Court records obtained by CBS station WPRI-TV in Providence revealed that Robert Dorgan had a documented history of disputes with family members, some involving issues related to gender identity. Chief Goncalves noted that the suspect appeared to be wearing female clothing at the time of the attack and that surveillance video showed there was no conversation or confrontation between Dorgan and the victims before the shooting began—the violence erupted suddenly and without warning. What makes this case particularly concerning from a public safety perspective is that Dorgan obtained the weapons used in the attack completely legally. He possessed a valid license to carry firearms in Florida, and investigators are now working to determine whether he was legally permitted to possess guns in other jurisdictions as well. The ease with which the shooter was able to arm himself, despite an apparent history of family conflict, raises difficult questions about how such tragedies might be prevented in the future.
Ordinary People Become Heroes
In the midst of unimaginable horror, the humanity and courage of ordinary people shone through. When Robert Dorgan began firing into the crowd, several bystanders—people who were there simply to watch a hockey game—immediately sprang into action to protect others. According to Chief Goncalves, at least three people, whether family members, friends, or supporters of the hockey teams, intervened to subdue the shooter, likely preventing even more casualties. Their quick thinking and bravery came at great personal risk, especially when Dorgan reached for a second firearm. It was at that moment that the gunman turned the weapon on himself, inflicting a fatal self-inflicted wound. “Several bystanders, whether family or friends or friends of the individuals playing hockey, stepped in. They intervened and at least three bystanders were able to [subdue] the suspect,” Goncalves recounted, paying tribute to those whose actions in the face of danger undoubtedly saved lives. These Good Samaritans represent the best of what communities can be when faced with the worst circumstances—people willing to risk everything to protect their neighbors.
A Community Comes Together in Grief
In the wake of this tragedy, Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien spoke about the profound impact the shooting has had not just on his city, but on the entire region. “What should have been a joyful gathering of students, parents, athletes and their families and friends became a moment of frustrating and turmoil, and has shaken the community of Pawtucket, and the communities of all the representatives that are here and the state, as well as the core hockey community,” the mayor said, capturing the sense of violation felt when violence intrudes on spaces that should be safe. Yet even in grief, Grebien emphasized the resilience that defines his community: “Pawtucket is a very strong and resilient community. We will learn from one another, we will support one another and together we will get through this.” This shooting marks the second mass shooting in Rhode Island in recent months, following a December 13 incident at Brown University in Providence that left two dead and nine injured. The frequency of such violence has prompted state officials to focus on providing comprehensive support to affected communities. Angelica Infante-Green, Rhode Island Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, emphasized the importance of a coordinated response: “This is our second event. We have to make sure our community feels the state coming together to wrap around services and support. And that’s what we’re here to do.” Resources are being made available to families to support students, many of whom are currently out of school for winter break and will need help processing this trauma when they return. Pawtucket officials have also urged anyone experiencing a mental health crisis to reach out for help through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, recognizing that healing from such an event requires not just time but also professional support and community solidarity.
