Four children with cancer were evacuated from the Gaza Strip to Jordan on Wednesday for medical treatment. They were accompanied by 12 family members and entered Jordan through a coordinated effort by the Jordanian Armed Forces, Ministry of Health, and the World Health Organization. After crossing the border by land, the children were airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Jordan for further care.
Earlier this year, Jordan’s King Abdullah II announced the country’s readiness to receive sick children from Gaza. In March, Jordan launched the Jordanian Medical Corridor initiative, which allowed the transfer of the first group of patients. This group included 29 children and 44 family members. Seventeen children who completed treatment recently returned to Gaza.
The goal of the medical corridor is to help about 2,000 children from Gaza who suffer from cancer or other serious illnesses. This initiative is part of Jordan’s wider humanitarian response following the outbreak of the latest Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023.
Jordan has set up field hospitals near Gaza’s border and sent numerous convoys carrying medical supplies and food aid. The country has also evacuated many wounded people who need medical treatment not available inside the Gaza Strip. These actions highlight Jordan’s ongoing commitment to supporting those affected by the conflict.
